A group of primary school pupils put down their pens for a day as they gained their first insight into the working world from a leading York hotel.
The 11-year-olds from Poppleton Road School joined the team at The Best Western Monkbar Hotel to discover different roles within a hotel.
One group supported the restaurant staff by preparing the restaurant for lunch, the second polished and prepared cutlery, and the third joined the housekeeping brigade to master the art of bed making.
Hotel Director June Nelsey, said: “I am a great supporter of learning through hands-on-experience and believe it really is the best way to find out about any job, and hotels are no exception.
“To ensure the visit was both memorable and beneficial to the pupils’ development, I planned an itinerary which was as practical as possible to demonstrate the diverse nature of hotel employment.”
Lunchtime also proved an exciting change from the norm, as pupils learnt about bread before rolling up their sleeves and making their own healthy sandwiches with food and beverage manager, Dave Asbury.
June added: “Youngsters often talk about what they want to be when they grow-up; these pupils have now reached this age where they will start thinking about their future. So who knows, we may have uncovered a new generation of budding hoteliers!”
The pupils arrived at The Best Western Monkbar Hotel at 9.30am for their introductions before setting to work and headed back to school at 2.15pm.
This programme was organised by the North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership ("NYBEP") which aims to find new ways to enrich both schools and colleges curriculum's through the world of work.
