Pupils from York’s Yearsley Grove Primary School headed to a city centre hotel this Friday (July 3) to learn the art of table service.

The youngsters, from Year 5, were taught how to carry plates, serve food and clear tables ahead of the now traditional Year 6 Leavers Ball, which is being held at the Best Western Monkbar Hotel on the evening of Monday, July 6.

An “Apprentice-style interview panel – made up of representatives from the hotel, teachers and Year 6 pupils – grilled 30 candidates for the “honour” of being able to look after the needs of their older school colleagues at the function.

This team – dressed accordingly in white shirts and black trousers - will greet the guests with drinks on arrival and then look after them in the restaurant as they tuck into a three-course meal, again chosen by the leavers.

Monkbar Hotel director June Nelsey said: “The Year 6 pupils take this ball extremely seriously. Working to a budget, they sit down with the senior team here to choose an appropriate menu, the music they will dance to and, of course, which ten-year-olds will be serving them.

It’s very pleasing to see children this age getting involved in the planning stage. They do it because they want their party to be a real success.

As you would expect, the questions from the 11-year-olds who were last year’s servers the questions were very rigorous and those who impressed were recruited with cries of ‘You’re Hired!
