A York Hotel Manager is literally sprinting to the moon and back in training for next weekend’s London Marathon.

Best Western Monkbar Hotel deputy manager Darrell Burnham is running the marathon in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Woodlands resource and respite care centre, on Hull Road, and his gruelling training regime includes a daily run past the planets along the Selby cycle track.

The route, from York to Selby, takes the keen runner – who completed last year’s Marathon in 4 hours and 43 minutes - past large sculptures of planets along a 15 mile course adjacent to the River Ouse.

Darrell said: “I enjoying running immensely, but it can sometimes be tedious running along roads and through residential areas.

This route is perfect for my training as it’s interesting. The planets also act as milestones, so I know how much further there is to go.

Woodlands is a great cause to represent and this is the fourth time I will have either run a full or half marathon on their behalf. My goal is to beat last year’s time. It might be one small step for man, but it’s a giant leap for me!

Pledges can be made to support Darrell’s London Marathon by contacting him at The Best Western Monkbar Hotel, on 01904 667700.

The London Marathon takes place on Sunday, April 26.
