York School Pupils Serve Up A Treat For Leavers At Leading City Centre Hotel

Pupils from Yearsley Grove Primary School will be heading to one of the city’s best known hotels on Monday July 21 for York’s only Year Six Leaver’s Ball.
The youngsters, who leave the school next week, have worked with the chefs and management team at the Best Western Monkbar Hotel, where the ball is being held, to be responsible for the planning for the evening – from choosing the menu, the decorations for the room and the DJ to play the music.
And, to ensure the food is served with style, they have interviewed and “hired” and helped to “train” Year 5 counterparts to wait on during the night.
These children are now being put through their paces by Deputy Manager Darrell Burnham who has already given two sessions in the art of table service at the school. The final training takes place at the hotel on Friday July 18 at 1.30pm.
Best Western Monkbar Hotel director June Nelsey said: “This is the second time Yearsley Grove Primary School will have held its Year 6 Leavers Ball at the hotel. We are used to seeing 16 and 18 year olds pulling out the stops when it comes to end of term balls, but not 11-year-olds.
“Last year’s ball – the only Year 6 event of its kind in the city – was a wonderful night, and I’m sure next Monday’s function will be just as impressive. We havebeen working with the school to select the food for the young revellers and have also been teaching the waiting staff how to serve and clear plates.”
Ann Burn, head teacher of Yearsley Grove Primary School, said: “The Year 6 pupils have been eagerly anticipating this event and have put a great deal of effort into some enterprising activities to raise funds alongside planning for the actual event. We are all looking forward to another great experience.
“The ball is now a firm fixture on the school calendar and we are incredibly appreciative of grateful to June and her team for not only staging the event, but giving us the support we need.”
