York’s Best Western Monkbar Hotel has won gold for going green at this year’s York Press Business Awards.

The hotel scooped the gong in the Think Green Business of the Year category, for its evolving environmental policies and procedures.

The Monkbar, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in September, beat off competition from Easingwold-based Hawke Creative Business Park and Scoot Cycling Holidays from Stillingfleet.

Initiatives that helped it win the title included staff forming a dedicated “green team”, increasing recycling targets, encouraging guests and suppliers to act greener, forming a partnership with a local cycle shop and creating a herb garden.

The Monkbar was also the first city centre hotel to win the prestigious Silver Green Tourism Award.

Monkbar Hotel Director June Nelsey said: “Winning this award is a terrific feather in our cap and a superb endorsement for our environmental work.

Our green team work to the four Rs principle - Reduce, Re-use, Repair and Recycle, and it was my pleasure to accept this magnificent award on their behalf.
