York’s Best Western Monkbar Hotel has reported a three-fold rise in the number of conference delegates arriving to the venue by bicycle.

In order to accommodate the rising number of bicycles, the award-winning venue has created and installed a new purpose-made bike-rack, constructed from recycled materials.

Monkbar Hotel Director June Nelsey said: “York is well-known for being a cycling city, and York City Council has gone to great lengths to promote cycling to both residents and visitors alike.

Over the last year, we have seen a 30 per cent rise in the number of delegates and visitors arriving at the hotel on bicycles. We believe this has been in part due to the authority’s efforts.

On many occasions the bike racks we had just weren’t enough. In order to cater for our guests’ needs, we have made another from an redundant table stacker adding a further six secure bicycle slots which are undercover.

The hotel has been recognised by Green Tourism, and are the first city centre hotel to receive their “Silver” status for its continuing efforts to trade in a more environmentally friendly manner.

Recent Monkbar Hotel initiatives include the hotel creating its own herb garden, entering into a formal partnership with a nearby cycle shop to provide guests with bicycles during their stay and devising a selection of dog-friendly city walks.
