Monkbar Hotel Puts Young Yearsley Pupils Through Their Waiting-On Paces
Ahead of their annual Yearsley Grove Primary School Year 6 leavers’ party, younger pupils learned the art of table service, courtesy of staff at York’s Best Western Monkbar Hotel.
Traditionally Year 5 pupils are taught hospitality skills - which include carrying plates, serving food and clearing tables - at the city centre hotel, which has hosted the event for the last four years.
A leavers’ committee is appointed to help arrange the event by working with the food and beverage departments in select the menu, drinks on arrival, table décor and entertainment – all to a strict budget.
Monkbar Hotel director June Nelsey said: “The Year 6 pupils’ ball is now a firm fixture on our calendar. We don’t just provide the venue, we work with the pupils in make sure nothing is left to chance.
“An important element of the party is the service, which is undertaken by Year 5 pupils. It is seen as an honour to help out at the event and we make sure the pupils have been well taught in restaurant etiquette.
“They come a week before and the restaurant team spend an afternoon with them showing them the ropes. Hopefully some will consider a career in hospitality when they are old enough.”
