A York hotel’s “green team” has been nominated for a prestigious national award.
The Best Western Monkbar Hotel – which last year picked up the York Press Think Green Business Award – is one of four venues, and the only one outside London, to be shortlisted in the Considerate Hotelier Awards Considerate Green Team category.
Considerate Hoteliers is an association of hoteliers who encourage, assist and motivate fellow hoteliers to adopt sound and sustainable environmentally friendly and socially responsible policies and practices.
Over the last twelve months, the city centre hotel, led by its “green team” has implemented a raft of new environmental initiatives, in addition to bolstering existing ones, all aimed at reducing the Monkbar’s impact on the environment.
These recent additions to its green arsenal include teaming up with a local cycle shop to encourage guests to tour the city, and beyond, on two wheels; a courtyard garden with irrigation system, increasing the volumes of glass and card it recycles and a cycle rack made from recycled materials.
This led to the hotel becoming the first in York city centre to be awarded the Green Tourism Business Silver award.
Monkbar Hotel director June Nelsey said: “We are determined to become the leading environmentally-friendly hotel in York.
“The Green Team, which represents all the departments, is doing a fantastic job and this nomination is a massive vote of confidence in them.
“We are keeping our green fingers crossed that we can bring this award to York.”
The Considerate Hoteliers Awards takes place at London’s Savoy Hotel on Monday, May 23 2011.
